Fibrates may be indicated as part of the treatment of severe hypertriglyceridaemia (>10 mmol/L) to reduce the risk of pancreatitis.  They are an adjunct to dietary/lifestyle measures.  The treatment of any secondary causes for the hypertriglyceridaemia eg diabetes, alcohol, medications should always be considered the preferred treatment option, as fibrate treatment may not be required if secondary causes can be treated.
