Identify Pupils at Risk

Teachers should know which pupils in their classes have allergies and those that are known to be at higher risk for anaphylaxis.

The Go to website Scottish Government guidance advises schools to maintain a register of pupils prescribed an AAI e.g. via an alert message on the school information management system.

Management plans

Pupils diagnosed with allergies will have a personalised allergy action plan, provided by a healthcare professional. An example is the Go to website BSACI allergy action plan. This will state the allergen(s) to avoid and how to manage a mild, moderate or severe allergic reaction.

Teachers should be familiar with the management plan and discuss with the child and their parents/carers about the allergy.

Important information - be aware
Anaphylaxis is unpredictable.

Teachers should know how to prevent and respond to such emergencies even if there are no known pupils at risk of severe allergic reactions
