Become Familiar with School Policies

Guidelines by the Go to website European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology recommend that schools should have an allergy management policy in place that includes an emergency response protocol for responding to allergy emergencies. Parents/carers should be familiar with these.

A meeting should be organised with the Head Teacher or designated staff member to discuss the child’s care at school. It may be helpful to include the catering manager, support staff or school teachers in the meeting.

This should be in line with the advice from the healthcare professional. The meeting should discuss areas where the school can adapt to meet the needs of the child, for example clear labelling of allergens in the canteen.

Parent Teacher Association

If possible, parents/carers should get involved with the PTA committee. This is an excellent opportunity to voice opinions on the management of pupils with allergies at school and suggest improvements.
