Use the DSS Clinical Objective Value Score

The DSS Clinical Objective Value Score defined by Osheroff [Osheroff 2012, p 190] can be a helpful reference point in planning how to maximise the impact of your decision support tool:

Decision Support Clinical Objective Value Score

Score = P+O+C+N+G – (D+C), where:

P = Patient impact at individual or population level, e.g. safer care, lower morbidity / mortality, improved patient satisfaction

O = positive Organisational impact on e.g. resource use, regulatory compliance, support for quality improvement, reduced liability, financial probity

C = Clinician impact, e.g. enhanced workflow, adherence to consensus or evidence based practice, enhanced responsibilities or capabilities, projects of particular clinical interest

N = Number of patients positively affected

G = Gap between current and ideal practice for this problem

D = Difficulty of addressing this objective with decision support

C = Cost of extending the RDS to include this objective, e.g. form sourcing content or incorporating it in RDS

For all variables, the calculation needs to consider the certainty associated with the variable as well as its size.
