"Information given on this site is not meant to take the place of a talk with your doctor or health worker."

  • Bisphosphonates are a group of drugs used to treat and prevent Osteoporosis. These work by preventing bone breakdown and increasing bone density and strength.
  • Bisphosphonates are poorly absorbed and any food in the stomach will reduce the amount of medicine you
    absorb into your system.
  • Take just after you get out of bed in the morning before eating and drinking.
  • Swallow tablet with at least 180 to 240ml of water only.
  • Never take with tea, coffee, milk or juice or any liquid other than water.
  • Swallow the tablet whole. Do not chew, crush or suck the tablet.
  • After you take your tablet do not eat, drink or take any medicines (including vitamins) for at least 30 minutes.
  • Do not lie down for at least 30 to 45 minutes.
  • The reason for taking these tablets is to help prevent fractures, including hip and painful vertebral fractures.
  • You should not expect them to make you feel better, although some patients do report a reduction in back pain.
  • It is very important that you take your tablets regularly, and according to the instructions above. It is likely that you will need to take these for several years. If you ever have any problems related to this treatment, please discuss with your doctor, pharmacist or Osteoporosis Specialist Nurse (details above and below).

Please do not just stop taking them!

How to take your Calcium and Vitamin D3 Supplements (Adcal D3, Calcichew D3 forte, Calfovit etc...)

  • You must not take your Calcium & Vitamin D until at least four hours after your bisphosphonate.
  • Calcium and Vitamin D3 is prescribed with your treatment as studies have shown a reduction in fractures in people who have taken daily supplements of Calcium 1200mg and Vitamin D3 800IU daily.
  • Your calcium & vitamin D supplements should be taken twice daily unless advised otherwise, preferably at
    lunchtime and early evening.
  • If you are taking Thyroxine, Bisphosphonates, Strontium Ranelate, Iron or Tetracycline you must leave 4 hours between taking these medicines and taking your Calcium and Vitamin D3 tablets.
  • If you find your Calcium & Vitamin D difficult to take, please discuss with your doctor or Osteoporosis Specialist Nurse. There may be a more suitable alternative which they can offer to you. Please do not stop taking it, since this is important for the success of your treatment.
