Daily Care

If the client has been prescribed anti-sickness medicines, check the instructions. Often they must be given 20-30 minutes prior to eating to reduce the sickness.

Pay attention to oral hygiene (See Mouth Care) and watch out for oral thrush.

Encourage taking small amounts of food regularly throughout the day.

Suggest warm or cold food, as these don’t smell as strong as hot food.

Encourage dry foods such as crackers.

Food or drink containing ginger can help. Try crystallised ginger, ginger tea, gingerbeer or ginger biscuits.

Suggest that they sip fizzy drinks.

Position the client appropriately to eat in a chair if possible.

Encourage plenty of fresh air where possible.

Encourage relaxation as this can reduce anxiety.

Contact the GP, District Nurse or Coordinator if there are any changes that cause concern.
