Parental herpes simplex and visiting

Warning

The lesions of herpes simplex (cold sores) are infectious and the virus can be passed from parent to baby.

Transmission requires close contact between the lesion and the baby.  It is inappropriate to limit parents with such lesions from visiting their baby on the unit but some simple precautions should be in place :

  1. Good hand washing before handling the baby is important
  2. The baby should not come into contact with the lesion ('no kissing')
  3. The lesion should be getting treatment with topical acyclovir
  4. Parents should not handle other babies.

In some circumstances where the baby is thought to be particularly immunocompromised (e.g. the extremely preterm baby or the infant on high dose steroids) there may be a need to consider restricting contact but this should be discussed with the attending consultant.
