Introduction

Copper intrauterine devices (Cu-IUD) are non hormonal and vary in size and shape. They consist of copper and plastic, with some types containing silver or other noble metal, which helps prevent corrosion.

They have pre and post fertilisation effects. Alterations in the copper content of cervical mucus inhibit sperm penetration. Fertilisation is inhibited through the effect of copper on the motility of sperm and eggs. If fertilisation has already occurred the endometrial inflammatory reaction has been shown to have anti-implantation effect.
