Ultrasound scans by obstetric registrars

Warning

The RCOG basic training modules are a useful way of obtaining basic training in obstetric ultrasound.

The skills obtained from these can be used by the registrars to assist with patient management, including out of hours management, and can be particularly useful to confirm presentation in labour, assess placental site and confirm that a pregnancy is ongoing.

However, there are limitations:

  • A decision should never be taken that a pregnancy is non-viable, irrespective of gestation, without obtaining a second scan opinion from either the on call consultant, or from another appropriately qualified sonographer at later stage. In particular, an ERPOC should never be carried out without a second opinion.
  • If there is any doubt about any of the scan findings, they should not be used to influence clinical management.
