Overview of the management of sexually transmitted infections and partner notifications guideline (G009)

Warning

Background and supporting information

This document sets out the process by which sexually transmitted infections and partner notification will be managed within NHS Ayrshire and Arran. The aim of the process is to improve public health by ensuring that effective treatment and partner notification are carried out whenever possible after a sexually transmitted infection is diagnosed.

To ensure specialist expertise is available to support partner notification the sexual health department will be notified by the laboratory of all positive results for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, HIV and syphilis. Clinical teams will be prompted to offer support with the partner notification by a message on the result issued by the lab.

The partner notification discussion should be initiated by the clinician who sees the patient to discuss the result of the test, with the assistance of the Sexual Health Department if required. The process is set out in the charts below.

N.B. Chlamydia is the commonest condition and will normally be managed by the clinical team who took the test leading to diagnosis; hence it is considered separately.
