Introduction, purpose and scope of the guideline

Introduction

This guideline will provide you with the practical procedure to provide the care of central venous access devices (CVADs) namely – Central Lines, PICC Lines, Hickman Lines and Portacaths.

Please be aware that this guideline does not make / deem you competent in using these devices. Prior to working with CVADs you must undertake the e-learning module on learnPro ‘Care and maintenance of Central Venous Access Devices’. Following this you must access a relevant mentor who has been deemed competent in the use of CVADs who can supervise and assess your practice, using the central venous access resource pack after you have completed the e-learning module. You must also adhere to these guidelines when accessing these devices.

Purpose of this guideline

This guideline has been developed to inform nursing, clinical support workers and medical staff of the correct, routine care and maintenance of central venous access devices (CVADs) to promote positive patient outcomes.

CVADs should only be accessed by staff that have completed the e learning module on learnPro or a face to face teaching session and completed the CVAD competency framework by utilising a competent practitioner. Following this staff must complete the CVAD e learning module on an annual basis to remain up to date with clinical practice.

Scope of this guideline

This guideline should enable any competent registered nurse, clinical support worker or doctor to provide support and care to patients with a CVAD within Ayrshire and Arran, excluding renal lines. This guideline should be used for advice on changing the dressing, flushing CVADs; blood sampling; commencing and discontinuing an infusion and includes a trouble shooting guide.  Staff should adhere to these guidelines to ensure best practice across Ayrshire and Arran.
