Initially the course will help you to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the research process.  You will then develop the skills to search literature, identify evidence, quality assess and extract relevant information.  Finally, you will be provided with the knowledge and the skills to develop a research question that can be used as the basis of a research proposal that can be developed in subsequent courses.

The Introduction to Health Research course has been developed to give you a solid foundation in health-related research to conduct and understand research.  The course is a perfect starting point for healthcare professionals and early-career researchers looking to improve their research qualifications or gain a strong professional advantage in the workplace.

What will I study?

• Understand the importance of research and evidence-based practice
• Develop an in-depth understanding of the research process and how it informs practice
• Review and assess the quality of academic literature
• Formulate a research question

This is a Masters Level (SCQF 11) course with study of the equivalent of 5 credits and upon successful completion of this course, delegates will be able to progress onto our Fundamentals of Research design course (10 credits).  Please note that this course is running as a pilot for summer 2021 and so it will be run on our OpenUWS learning platform rather than our main MyUWS system.

Course Delivery and Assessment

Our Introduction to Health Research course is delivered part-time and wholly online.  You will be able to study in your own time anywhere in the world and at a pace that suits you.  This means there’s no need to relocate or take a career break.

The course incorporates 10 hours of learning activities and will require roughly 50 hours of study.  It is expected that the course can be undertaken in around 4 weeks, although delegates will have access to the materials for eight weeks from enrolment.  The course will be assessed through an online quiz.

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate of achievement.  Please note that this course does not carry credit that can be put towards a larger award.

Course pre-requisites

This is a masters-level course and, as such, requires a rigorous level of academic study.  Applicants should have completed an undergraduate degree with a research component (for example a dissertation) or have significant professional experience.  Applicants should be working in a healthcare or allied role.  This could include both clinical and non-clinical positions, where the applicant is keen to incorporate research into their activities.

Pricing

The course fee is £250.  Applicants resident in Scotland who are accepted on the course are eligible for course subsidy through the UWS Upskilling Fund.  This fund provides places on courses that address skills gaps and support retraining, reskilling and upskilling in Scotland.  The funding is applied automatically on registration; if you receive this funding a registration fee of £50 is payable only.
