Experience in Psychiatry
Typically all medical students will be allocated for a 4 week block to Gartnavel Royal Hospital. The 1st and 4th week is with a general adult psychiatrist whilst week 2-3 is with a speciality consultant.
Rest assured that despite the covid restrictions we will still try and ensure that you get an exceptional experience in psychiatry!
Prior to covid restrictions the placement would have been a combination of both community, inpatient setting and an opportunity to shadow at ECT. However, you will now primarily remain at the GRH site unless your consultant has created some opportunities for you to attend the community resource centre. These opportunities are more likely to be “virtual” by joining through the Microsoft Teams app or Attend Anywhere app than perhaps attending in person.
On the GRH site you can access the psychiatric library in the Admin Building. Furthermore, you can use the lecture room at the end of the corridor – door code 153 (roman numerals). If you use this space then please ensure that it is left tidy and the door is locked when you leave.
I suggest that you utilise your Psychiatry Logbook to ensure that you are covering the relevant topics in your curriculum. For assessments, you require 1 mini-cex, 1 CBD and 2 portfolio cases. Try and complete them early on in your block so that you have an opportunity of constructive feedback and also making any necessary changes to pass your block. As before any sick leave must be recorded on your My Campus platform and please also inform your clinical team.
Finally we are also trialling Near Peer Teaching so that a Trainee doctor is allocated specifically to a medical student allowing you more exposure to clinical ward activity, support and a session of a mock OSCE to ensure that you are ready for your exams!
